Charrette

On the 6th of September, we had a meeting with two architects from WRT Landscaping firm.
www.wrtdesign.com

After consultating with the architects, They gave valuable feedback on our three concepts and helped narrow it down to one.

The concept we are going to develop further is the “Cafe Stop”.

Cafe stop is a friendly transportation stop that aims to create a calm welcoming atmosphere, that makes people feel safe and secure, while they wait for transport.

The cafe achieves this by creating a space that gives its visitors free coffee on entry and encourages them to be social with the other participants. The Cafe will also have social/trivia games that will get the visitors to explore the entire parklet and gives them information on travelling safe, as well as important contact information.

The team split into two groups, and did two different things for the presentation.

The first group created the presentation sheet which had a 1:8 scale plan and elevation view of our patklet as well as a list of the various materials that we would be needing. In addition they wrote down any notes and details that were important in communicating out message.
The second team focused on creating a rough 1:8 scale model. This model was created using a combination of materials, and was originally intended to just be an aesthetic model. We created the "school bus" exterior of the cafe, and added as many details as we could in the tie frame we were given.

The parklet achieves this in two ways;

First is the social cafe. This is the main theme of our project and it aims to create a social, relaxing environment for commuters to come in and enjoy a hot drink while they wait for their transportation. Our environment is creating a safe, friendly, space that is open to everyone. We look to play music, and to give out free drinks to our visitors, and try and engage the visitors to be social with each other as opposed to staring at their phone.

Secondly, we aim to be informative through an interactive trivia hunt game. The users will be given a list of questions, and the answers to these questions will be hung on paper cups above all the visitors. They would have to navigate through the cups and find the right answer to the question. The winners will get some sort of prize (food) this is done to encourage awareness of safer transportation methods in a friendly and engaging way.

Ideation & Development

Due to the “safety” theme of our theme, we had sketches and ideas on building a more welcoming and homely environment. We came up with ideas of building a house like space to create a home like safety surrounding with hanging lights, which inspired us from Chinatown’s hanging lanterns. Our next idea was to create a front and back bus shaped tables to make our theme more obvious to the audience. W e ditched the home idea and went with the bus setup. We adjusted our design based on the materials we have and the next set of sketches were formed. We decided to use metal frames as the bus and have synthetic grass to create a big contrast. Instead of using ropes going across the frames, we decided to settle for orange plastic nets over the roof of the frame where we can hang cups. Due to the sizes of the materials, our final design was readjusted to create a cleaner and more practical look. We cut down the size of the bus by half and created a more open seating area. ...

Teams were formed and were given out themes to follow through with our concepts. Our group was assigned the following theme: Safety Transit Environment.

Acquiring Sponsorship

With coffee as our main pull factor for our project, we needed sponsorship to supply us with snacks and refreshments. Our professor recommended trying to obtain sponsorship from Cafe Rosso . We reached out to Mr.Allum from Cafe Rosso with the help of our professor. They agreed to sponsor us and provided us with cups, refreshments, and even snacks!  Many thanks to Cafe Rosso!
