Building & Installation.


After realizing how big of a project we had on our hands, we started building early. We tried to be as resourceful as we could and made good use of the materials that were provided/found. Using cardboard and metal pipes we constructed the frame of the bus, and used two tables as the front and back using a yellow table cloth. We then used fake grass and chairs to create a seating environment and utilized our space to the best of our abilities.

The Main Event

Timeline: September 20th, 2018 @ Holloway & Arellano Ave 8:30 am - 9:30 am: We started moving materials, getting last minute touches added, coffee arrived, and set up our installment. 9:30 am: Cafe stop is officially opened! Xin took amazing photographs of the set up, and the members. 9:40 am - 10:00 am: We waited for audiences, tried to promote our stop but our attempts were futile due to people rushing to class. 10:10 am: First interested passerby showed up, we explained our project and offered them a cup of coffee! Our first cup was hung down the roof of our bus. Lois was in charge of hanging the cups. 10:30 am: Our stop became busy, we ran out of cups, Kevin went to go get some more. Ideation & Development

Due to the “safety” theme of our theme, we had sketches and ideas on building a more welcoming and homely environment. We came up with ideas of building a house like space to create a home like safety surrounding with hanging lights, which inspired us from Chinatown’s hanging lanterns. Our next idea was to create a front and back bus shaped tables to make our theme more obvious to the audience. W e ditched the home idea and went with the bus setup. We adjusted our design based on the materials we have and the next set of sketches were formed. We decided to use metal frames as the bus and have synthetic grass to create a big contrast. Instead of using ropes going across the frames, we decided to settle for orange plastic nets over the roof of the frame where we can hang cups. Due to the sizes of the materials, our final design was readjusted to create a cleaner and more practical look. We cut down the size of the bus by half and created a more open seating area. ...
